Why choose photography

In today's visually-driven world, photography has evolved from a mere hobby to an art form that captures the essence of life. With the accessibility of smartphones equipped with high-quality cameras, almost everyone has the potential to become a photographer. Whether you're an amateur or a seasoned professional, diving into the world of photography can be an immensely rewarding experience.

I found photography to be a great creative outlet during a time of lockdowns, high unemployment rates, job losses beyond economic control, surging house prices and increasing interest and inflation rates. Good old COVID19 wreaking havoc on a global scale and yet we're still mentally and physically recovering from the trauma that was, both personally and as a country.

In this blog, I expose why I chose to take up photography and the reasons might actually surprise you.

  1. Creative Expression: Photography is a powerful medium for creative expression. It conveys emotions, tells stories, and captures moments that words alone might struggle to articulate. I found as I continued to develop my skills, I discovered my own unique style and perspective that enabled me to showcase the world through my own eyes. Every photograph becomes a canvas for your imagination, and with each click, I found myself becoming a better storyteller.
  2. Connection with the World: Through photography, I developed a deeper connection with the world around me. Whether it's nature's breathtaking landscapes, bustling city streets, or the intricate details of everyday life, I started to notice the beauty in the mundane. Photography encourages mindfulness and an appreciation for the present moment, as you constantly seek opportunities to capture life's fleeting instances.
  3. Memories Preserved: Life is a collection of precious moments, and photography allows you to freeze those moments in time. Whether it's a joyous celebration, a serene sunset, or a candid family gathering, photographs become cherished memories that you can revisit and share with loved ones for years to come. The ability to capture memories and preserve them forever is one of the most beautiful aspects of photography, one that I hold close to my heart and soul.
  4. Lifelong Learning: Photography is an art form that offers endless opportunities for growth and learning. From understanding camera settings and composition to exploring post-processing techniques, there's always something new to discover. The pursuit of knowledge in photography is a journey that never truly ends, and every step of the way brings with it a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment. I truly learn something new on every single shoot.
  5. Stress Relief: Photography can be an excellent stress-reliever and a form of mindfulness practice. When you immerse yourself in the act of capturing images, you become fully present in the moment. The focus required to compose a shot and the joy of seeing your subjects come to life on the screen or in print can provide a much-needed escape from the stresses of daily life.
  6. Perspective Shift: As a photographer, I learnt to see the world from different perspectives. This is probably the most crucial reason for my switch to fun loving photographer. I immediately started to notice the interplay of light and shadow, the subtle nuances of colours, and the hidden details that often go unnoticed. This heightened awareness not only improved my photography skills but also enhanced my ability to perceive the world around me more profoundly.
  7. Connection with Others: Photography is a universal language that connects people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Sharing photographs can spark conversations, evoke emotions, and even inspire change. Through photography, I was able to share powerful visual narratives that drive empathy and understanding with others.

Not only were the above reasons so critical for my mental health at the time I started this passion project back in 2020, but starting a business in photography now means being able to 'stay at home' with my growing and neurologically developing children before they hit the dreaded 'tweens' and teenage years. It means setting up my own 'work, life, balance' that works for me, having the time and freedom to create something that is all mine without a 'boss'.

Photography is not just about capturing images; it's about capturing the essence of life itself. The art of photography offers a multitude of benefits, from creative expression and mindfulness to preserving memories and connecting with others. Whether you're interested in pursuing photography as a hobby or professionally, the rewards it brings are immeasurable.

So, grab your camera, explore the world through its lens, and embark on a journey of self-discovery and artistic fulfilment. There's a whole world of beauty waiting to be captured - it's time to start clicking!
